Cheltenham Festival: Did the bettors outsmart the operators?

Boswell told Gambling Insider that day one was a bad start for the bookies. It got off to a horrible start, with Nicky Henderson winning on Constitution Hill. Another well-backed triumph came in the Arkle, with Edwardstone for Alan King at 5/2.

However, things could have been much worse on day one if Willie Mullins' Gaelic Warrior had won the Boodles Handicap; he was nearly beaten at the post by Brazil in a photo finish, leaving BetVictor trailing at the conclusion of the day.

Day two was more successful for Cheltenham Festival operators, as they outperformed bettors. The feature race was won by second-favourite Energumene, who outperformed well-backed Shishkin at Prestbury Park.

Additional Coral Cup results, like as Commander of Fleet's 50/1 triumph, meant bookmakers had a profitable day overall. Many bettors placed sentimental wagers on Tiger Roll, who, despite running in difficult conditions, came close to a famous sixth triumph before being beaten on the line by Delta Work.

On day three, numerous dark horses defeated favourites, allowing bookies to pull ahead of punters. Galopin Des Champs' final fence fall set the tone for a thrilling day, as he was marginally the favourite ahead of winner Bob Olinger.

Similarly, Dinoblue's defeat in the Mares Hurdle provided a significant boost to bookies, before 40/1 outsider Chambard took Venetia Williams' final victory.

However, the last day was a step back for bookmakers, as many heavily supported favourites performed well. In fact, the favourites won all of the important races on Day 4.

For example, the Blue Ribbon Chase returned to Ireland, where last year's second-place finisher, A Plus Tard, ridden by Rachael Blackmore, won in dramatic fashion.

This tendency continued with other favourites, like horse Vauban, who won the Triumph Hurdle for Mullins. Furthermore, Mullins had a successful day overall, winning four races, including The Hunters, where his son won on Billaway, the 13/8 favourite.
